We had a great first week in 1st grade! Next week we will go into full swing! I just wanted to clarify some things that will be expected next week.
There will be homework every night starting next week. This will be comprised of two homework assignments each night. It is usually one math and one reading assignment but science and social studies sometimes make an appearance in homework (especially around test time). Homework should take between 20-30 minutes depending on the nature of the assignment. If your child struggles greatly with an assignment, please let me know so I can reinforce this concept at school. I check this homework daily and your child will receive a homework grade for completing homework each night. I don't assign homework on Fridays, but it is my hope that students read over the weekend.
Students will be having a spelling test every Friday. These spelling words will be sent home every Monday in the form of a pre-test. This pre-test can be used to assess your child's weaknesses so you know which words to focus more on at home. Please assist your child with studying for these tests.
Starting next week, we will be fully starting each of our subjects. This includes, reading, writing, grammar, math, science, social studies, and centers. I will list what we are learning at the bottom of the homework contract so you can reinforce concepts at home! I believe that we are a team and working together benefits your child. For this reason, please stay in contact with me about any concerns you're having.
On the school end, I will continually provide a learning environment that is positive and fun. When students like coming to school each day, we've won half the battle :-)
I'm happy to be a part of your team. Let the games begin!
